Arrival in Agra (Afternoon)

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Arrive in Agra, either by train, car, or local transportation, and check into your hotel. You’ll have a few hours before the moonlight tour begins, so you can either rest or explore Agra’s local markets for souvenirs and handicrafts. Agra is famous for marble inlay work, textiles, and leather goods, so this is a good opportunity to shop.

2

Pre-Moonlight Tour Exploration (Optional)

3:00 PM – 6:00 PM: If you arrive early and want to explore Agra further, consider visiting nearby attractions like Mehtab Bagh, a beautiful garden located across the Yamuna River that offers excellent views of the Taj Mahal at sunset. Another option is to visit the Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb (Baby Taj), a smaller but intricately designed Mughal-era monument.
This pre-tour exploration will give you a fuller sense of Agra’s beauty before you experience the Taj Mahal by moonlight.

3

Dinner Break (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM)

4

Moonlight Tour Preparation (8:00 PM)

8:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Head towards the Taj Mahal’s ticket counter, located near the East Gate. The Taj Mahal Moonlight Tour is only available on five specific nights each month: the night of the full moon and the two nights before and after. Since the number of visitors is limited to about 400 people per night (divided into eight groups of 50), it is essential to pre-book tickets, either online or through authorized agents. Tickets typically need to be reserved a day or two in advance due to high demand.
8:30 PM: After purchasing or collecting your tickets, proceed to the entrance gate. Security is strict, and only small hand-held items are allowed (no large bags, cameras, or electronic devices except mobile phones).

5

Entering the Taj Mahal under Moonlight (9:00 PM - 10:30 PM)

9:00 PM: Your group will be escorted into the Taj Mahal complex, where you will enter the forecourt and gardens. The moonlight casts a soft, silvery glow on the monument, giving it an otherworldly appearance. As the cool breeze flows from the Yamuna River, the reflection of the Taj Mahal in the moonlight offers a tranquil and breathtaking view.
9:15 PM – 10:15 PM: Spend around 30 minutes to one hour inside the Taj Mahal complex, depending on your ticket slot. The moonlight accentuates the intricate carvings and details of the monument, making them appear more pronounced. The marble seems to glow, creating a dream-like experience. You will be restricted to viewing the Taj Mahal from a specific platform in the gardens for preservation reasons, but the view is still spectacular.
Visitors can soak in the peaceful and spiritual ambiance, with fewer crowds and the calming sound of the surrounding environment. This setting is ideal for quiet reflection or simply admiring the architectural beauty of the Taj Mahal.

Photography Tips and Experience

Though cameras are not allowed during the moonlight tour, mobile phones can be used to capture the magical beauty of the Taj Mahal. It’s recommended to keep your phone’s flash off to preserve the moonlit ambiance and to experiment with longer exposure settings for the best results.
The reflection of the Taj Mahal in the moonlight, combined with its perfect symmetry and the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding gardens, provides an unparalleled opportunity for photography enthusiasts, even with mobile devices.

7

Departure from Taj Mahal (10:30 PM)

10:30 PM: After enjoying your allotted time at the Taj Mahal, you will be escorted out of the complex. While the moonlit tour of the Taj Mahal is relatively short (due to preservation and security reasons), it is enough to experience the monument’s surreal beauty and quiet grandeur.

8

Return to Hotel (Late Night)

10:45 PM – 11:00 PM: After the tour, return to your hotel. If you’re feeling energized, you can take a leisurely stroll around Agra’s quieter night streets or have a cup of tea to wind down from the magical experience.

9

Optional: Post-Tour Walk in Mehtab Bagh (Night Visit)

If you still have energy after the moonlight tour, consider a brief nighttime walk around Mehtab Bagh. This riverside garden offers another perspective of the Taj Mahal at night, with fewer crowds and more open space. The view of the Taj Mahal’s reflection in the Yamuna River adds a mystical quality to the experience. However, this is an optional stop, as the main highlight of your night is already completed at the Taj Mahal.
